The usual problem. Reset day runs late, so the mannequins go straight into the storeroom, dust and all. A season later the grime has set, a joint has stiffened, and a piece with years left in it looks ready for the bin. Five minutes of care on the way in is what prevents that.
Clean Before You Store, Not After
Dust and body oil sit on the surface after weeks under lights and hands. Wipe every mannequin down before it goes into storage, not the next time you pull it out. Grime that sits for a season hardens and gets harder to lift off.
A five-minute wipe now is faster than a scrub later.
Match the Cleaner to the Finish
Different finishes need different care. Using the wrong cleaner is the most common way a mannequin gets damaged outside of an actual drop or knock.
- Glossy fiberglass or resin: mild soap, water, and a soft cloth. Skip ammonia-based glass cleaners, alcohol wipes, and anything abrasive. They dull the gloss over time and can leave fine surface cracks.
- Matte finish: same mild soap and water, but use a soft microfiber cloth only. Rubbing hard on a matte surface leaves light patches that catch the eye under store lighting.
- Chrome or metal stands and bases: wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. Standing water left on chrome causes spotting, and over months it can lead to rust around the joints.
- Fabric-wrapped or linen-covered forms: vacuum with a soft brush attachment first, then spot clean if needed. Never soak a fabric-wrapped form.
Check the Joints and Fittings While You’re At It
Ball joints, neck pegs, and stand screws collect dust and thread lint every time you change an outfit. A stiff joint is often just built-up dust, not a broken part. Clear it with a dry brush or a can of compressed air before you assume it needs replacing.
Tighten loose screws now, before the mannequin sits boxed up for a season. A loose fitting left alone tends to work looser, not stay the same.
Store Them So They’re Ready for the Next Reset
How you store a mannequin matters as much as how you clean it.
- Keep them upright where you can. Lying a mannequin on its side for months puts steady weight on one hip or shoulder joint and can warp it.
- Wrap exposed fiberglass or resin in a soft cloth or bubble wrap, not tight plastic sheeting. Moisture trapped under plastic can cause discoloration over a long storage stretch.
- Keep them out of direct sun and away from heaters or windows. Heat and UV fade and warp a plastic finish faster than normal handling ever will.
- Keep humidity as stable as you can. A stockroom that swings between damp and dry through the year puts repeated stress on joints and glued sections.
- Store detachable limbs separately or padded. Don’t let a heavier part rest its weight on a smaller one, like a hand or a set of fingers.
